Making It So - Patrick Stewart

Anyone who knows me also knows that this will have been on my reading list almost as soon as it was released, which it was. I actually read this (well, listed to the audiobook narrated by the man himself) back in January! It's rare that I listen to books, but I had a few books that I wanted to read at the same time, so I listed to this while I was out and about or at the gym (nothing quite like deadlifting to Sir Pat Stew's dulcet tones), and read my other book around that. I'm pleased that I listed to it. I don't read many biographies and it made it feel more like a personal conversation, which was really nice.

The Plot

OK, I kept the same book review structure for this, so just role with it... The "plot" is Sir Patrick Stewart's life from his humble beginnings in Mirfield, North Yorkshire, to his well earned success present day. Most people know Pat Stew from his roles in Star Trek and X-Men, but he was, first and foremost, a classically trained stage actor before he got a sniff at the big screen and has continued to tread the boards throughout his television and film career, so you can expect to read a lot about this part of his life.

I've seen a lot of reviews from people saying they were disappointed that he doesn't start talking about his film and TV experiences until a long way in, but that's not how I feel. I'm probably biased because I have a history working in theatre as well (I was backstage gremlin. Was and still am influenced to work by biscuit offerings.), so that stuff interests the hell outa me. But in addition to that, Patrick Stewart is easily one of the greatest actors of our time (I'll fight whoever says otherwise), so why wouldn't you want to get to know about the whole picture of what makes Patrick Stewart the man he is?

You'll learn about his childhood, his family life, his early work experiences before being a paid actor, and his journey into TV and film up to present day. It's a long life lived, and a truly diverse, human, and adventurous one at that.
